Today's date, April 4, 2023, will go down as one of the most consequential days of the year for this country. Get ready, because by the time you hit your mattress to fall asleep tonight, major change could be on its way in America.
For just short of eight years, we have long waited for real accountability for our criminal President, Donald Trump. While defeating Trump and his party in three separate election victories in 2018, 2020, and 2022 was awfully satisfying, it has also been gut-wrenching to watch him escape legal justice every time we think the walls have finally closed on this guy. But it finally happened: We got him. And today, Donald Trump will have to appear in court against his will to answer for his crimes. The man who has been considered larger-than-life for so many of his supporters will be reduced to a muted criminal who has no other options than to speak one of two phrases: "Guilty" or "not guilty."
And just over six hours later, polls will close in the state of Wisconsin, concluding the most expensive judicial election in the history of the United States. If the liberal candidate, Janet Protasiewicz, can pull this thing off, the Wisconsin Supreme Court will flip from a 4-3 conservative majority to a 4-3 liberal majority, a first since the Bush era. In the coming months, the new liberal majority will be able to restore balance to Wisconsin's failing democracy. The state's notorious gerrymandering that has allowed republicans to maintain near-2/3 majorities in both houses of the legislature will finally be dismantled and replaced with districts that give Democrats a fighting chance of getting majorities in the legislature when they get the most votes. The state's 1849 near-total ban on abortions will be overturned, and women across Wisconsin will regain their human rights to reproductive freedom after having them taken away by the far-right Supreme Court. Democrats fighting to take back the U.S. House in 2024, which will be a battle of inches, will finally have a chance of winning more than just the two out of eight congressional districts they currently hold in the state when the map is reset to a level playing field.
If Daniel Kelly wins, the state will remain a desert for democracy, and women will continue to be deprived of their human rights. While I hope and believe that the 2024 presidential election will be won by Joe Biden with a comfortable margin of victory in the electoral college, the election could come down to one state. And it may be Wisconsin. If Daniel Kelly wins, the court might nullify an obvious win by Joe Biden and hand the state to Trump. If we stop Kelly today, that threat will be finished forever.
Todays' a big day, but it won't be the last of this year. Election Day 2023 will have its fair share of extremely vital elections for the survival of the Democrats in crucial states. In the state of Virginia, Republicans took control of the governorship and the state House in the 2021 election, when the country experienced a major backlash against Joe Biden. Democrats were able to hold on to the state Senate by only one seat, and in February of this year, they extended their majority in the chamber to 2 in a razor-thin special election. The Democrats' majority in the state Senate has been the only thing holding back a Republican wave of craziness from flooding Virginia. That includes abortion bans, book bans, anti-trans bills, and more. If Republicans gain control of the state Senate this November, abortion rights will be on the chopping block, along with a major risk to Democrats' 6-5 majority in the U.S. House districts. While state law somewhat protects the congressional districts from political influence, do not underestimate the willingness of Glenn Youngkin and his allies in the legislature to roll those protections back.
In addition, Kentucky Governor Andy BeShear will be fighting for his political life in his bid for re-election. While Kentucky Republicans are often able to override his veto, some of their lunatic bills have not managed to win the 2/3 support needed to override. If Democrats want to keep Kentucky from falling further into the well of crazy, we need to help re-elect the incumbent governor. BeShear is also a valuable commodity for Democrats looking forward in time to the 2028 presidential election. If he can survive two statewide elections in one of the reddest states in America, imagine how he could perform in the swing states, especially those in the blue wall like Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. While there are many other possibilities for Democrats to nominate as their candidate for 2028, I would prefer to pick from the biggest menu possible.
Buckle up, son. Today's gonna be a big fuckin' deal.
